A French Twist: Robert and Nadège Pellegatta, Hotel Owners

The 17-suite French Coco, a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, opened in summer 2016, presents travelers to Martinique with a stylish and decidedly different hotel option—one that’s rooted in its place, the traditional fishing village of Tartane. From the landscaped garden to the contemporary works by Martinique artists throughout the property, French Coco reflects the passions and local pride of its owners, Robert and Nadège Pellegatta.

What do you love most about living in Martinique?
We like the fact that we are surrounded by nature, which is always lush and green here, while birdsong and the sound of the surf are the best alarm clock ever known.

What advice would you give to someone visiting Martinique for the first time?
Do not be in a hurry and instead learn to simply live Martinique. Take time to fill your memories with beautiful landscapes and experiences with our welcoming people. Linger on our stunning beaches and taste some of our typical dishes made with love.

What experiences in Martinique would you recommend to visitors?
Hiking along the beaches in the south, the sunniest region, or in the north if you prefer lush vegetation and cooler air. Canyoning at Fond Saint Denis or boat tours of the Gorges de la Falaise. Kayaking in the mangroves of Trois-Îlets. Visiting the Dubuc Castle and its nature reserve on the Caravelle Peninsula. Scuba diving at Saint Pierre. Visiting some of the museums and the Schoelcher Library in Fort-de-France.

We’d recommend French Coco’s restaurant, of course. Le Zanzibar, located in a historic house right on the water in Le Marin, is also a favorite.

San Francisco, for its history, innovative spirit, and creativity.

Do you have any travel rituals?
We like to have a good coffee in the morning and read a local newspaper.

Do you maintain any routines from home while traveling or does it all go out the window?
No, the best way to feel on vacation is to break your regular routines.

Describe your travel personality in three words.
Discovery, gastronomy, meeting local people (well, that’s five words).

Spontaneous!
