This multi-level, underground burial complex that dates back to 4,000 B.C.E. is one of the country’s most unique. What makes this burial site different from all other burial sites? While being excavated in 1902, archeologists found red ochre paintings on some of the walls, along with miniature ceramic figurines including one called the “Sleeping Lady” that’s considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of prehistoric anthropomorphic representation. The figurine currently resides at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta. After extensive renovations, the site reopened in 2017 and is now open to ten visitors at a time, so you’re advised to book tickets early. The Hypogeum has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List of protected sites.
